Top 5 Kayak RoutesAround Olbia, Sardinia

Routes & Itineraries 7 min read

The north-eastern coast of Sardinia is one of the most spectacular in the Mediterranean for kayaking: transparent sea, hidden coves, sea caves and frequent dolphin sightings. Here are the 5 best routes, from the easiest to the most challenging.

Route 1 — San Teodoro Lagoon: the perfect beginner route

Easy 2–4 km 1–2 hours

Starting point: La Cinta beach, San Teodoro. Ideal for: absolute beginners, families with children, first kayak experience.

The San Teodoro Lagoon is the ideal route for those approaching kayaking for the first time. The waters are protected, shallow (rarely exceeding 1.5 metres) and crystal clear, perfect for snorkelling during stops. The absence of current or waves makes this route safe and accessible to all.

From La Cinta beach you paddle along the inside of the lagoon, discovering the flamingo colonies that nest here in spring, the sandy sandbars that emerge at low tide and the posidonia meadows visible on the seabed. An experience that surprises you with its tranquillity.

Route 2 — Porto Istana: coves and transparent seabed

Easy 3–5 km 1.5–2.5 hours

Starting point: Porto Istana / Spiaggia del Dottore. Ideal for: beginners with some experience, snorkelling lovers.

Porto Istana is one of the best-kept secrets on the north-eastern Sardinian coast. Paddling along the rocky shore north of Spiaggia del Dottore you'll discover a series of small coves accessible only by sea, with crystal-clear water and seabeds teeming with fish.

The route is suitable for beginners, but requires attention to the maestrale (north-westerly wind): always depart in the morning when the sea is flat. This area is perfect for combining kayaking with underwater exploration.

Route 3 — Golfo Aranci to Capo Figari: the scenic classic

Intermediate 6–8 km 3–4 hours

Starting point: Spiaggia delle Vacche, Golfo Aranci. Ideal for: intermediate paddlers, dolphin watching.

This is the most spectacular route near Olbia. From Spiaggia delle Vacche you paddle north along the rocky coastline of Capo Figari, a promontory that drops sheer into the sea. Along the way: sea caves accessible by kayak, posidonia seabeds at 2–3 metres depth, and the frequent presence of bottlenose dolphins that inhabit the Gulf of Olbia year-round.

The return trip can be done the same way or, for more experienced paddlers, by circumnavigating Isola Figarolo. Always depart before 9:30 AM to avoid the afternoon north-westerly wind.

Route 4 — Porto San Paolo → Tavolara Island: the iconic excursion

Intermediate 7–10 km round trip 4–5 hours

Starting point: Porto San Paolo beach. Ideal for: those with at least 1–2 previous kayak outings, wanting an unforgettable experience.

Tavolara Island is perhaps the most iconic destination for kayaking in north-eastern Sardinia. The crossing from Porto San Paolo (3–3.5 km) leads you to one of the most beautiful marine protected areas in the Mediterranean. The waters around the island are home to sea turtles, countless species of fish and spectacular rocky walls.

Once at Tavolara, you can explore Cala Spalmatore (northern beach, turquoise water and shallow seabed) and stop for lunch at the village trattoria. The return journey requires attention to afternoon winds — always plan to be back by 2–3 PM.

Route 5 — San Teodoro → Cala Brandinchi: the most beautiful beach

Easy-Medium 4–6 km 2–3 hours

Starting point: La Cinta beach, San Teodoro. Ideal for: paddlers of all levels who want to reach a breathtaking beach.

Cala Brandinchi, known as the "little Tahiti of Sardinia", is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Reachable by kayak from La Cinta in about 1.5–2 hours, it offers white sand, crystalline water and a natural environment that has remained virtually unspoilt.

Arriving by kayak means bypassing the tourist queues and enjoying this paradise in peace — especially in the morning. Pack a good supply of water and food: it's worth spending a few hours here before the return journey.

Practical advice for all routes

  • Always check the weather forecast before departing — the maestrale can make the sea choppy quickly
  • Depart early: between 7:30 and 9:00 AM you'll have the flattest sea and the most beautiful light
  • Tell someone your route and estimated return time
  • Bring plenty of water (minimum 1.5 litres per person for a half-day trip)
  • Wear sunscreen even on cloudy days — sea reflection doubles UV exposure
