When to choose the Kayak
The kayak is the right choice in the vast majority of cases on the Sardinian coast. Here's why:
- Wind: the Sardinian sea often has afternoon winds (maestrale). The kayak, with your body close to the water, is much more stable and easier to control than the SUP in choppy conditions.
- Long distances: if you want to reach Tavolara Island, Capo Figari or explore extended coastlines, the kayak allows you to cover 6–12 km without excessive fatigue.
- With children: the double kayak is perfect for families — children can sit in front and paddle as much or as little as they like.
- Beginners: the inflatable kayak has excellent secondary stability — it's almost impossible to capsize in calm conditions.
When to choose the SUP
The Stand Up Paddle is perfect in specific situations:
- Calm, shallow coves: in lagoons and protected bays with very shallow water, the SUP lets you glide above the seabed with a unique view.
- Physical training: the SUP engages the whole body — core, arms and legs. If you want a real workout in a spectacular setting, this is the choice.
- Flexibility: you can choose to stand, kneel or even sit on the SUP. Ideal for those who like to change position during the trip.
- Calm mornings: if you depart early (before 9 AM) and the sea is flat, the SUP is a magical experience for exploring the coast.
Our recommendation by experience level
Absolute beginner
→ Single or double kayak. Stable, easy to use and suitable even in light wind. With the double kayak, if one person tires, the other can compensate.
Intermediate (1–2 previous outings)
→ Kayak for excursions, SUP for lagoon mornings. If you book a half day in a protected area (San Teodoro, Porto Istana), the SUP is excellent. For anything else, kayak.
Experienced
→ Both, depending on the day. Those with experience can choose based on the sea conditions forecast: calm sea with no wind → SUP; morning with light breeze or excursion destinations → kayak.
What about the Sardinian wind?
The maestrale is the dominant wind on the north-eastern coast of Sardinia. It typically picks up between 11 AM and 2 PM, with gusts that can reach 25–35 km/h in peak season. On the SUP, these conditions make paddling extremely tiring — or impossible. The kayak, on the other hand, handles these conditions much better thanks to the lower centre of gravity.
Practical advice: whatever craft you choose, always depart before 9:30 AM and plan to be back before 1 PM in July and August.
